From September 7 to 17, 2008 hundreds of amputee athletes, wheelchair athletes and athletes with other disabilities from around the world were in Beijing for the 2008 Paralympic Games.

The Paralympics are the second biggest sports event after the Olympic Games. Athletes compete in various sports, including swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair fencing and athletics.

China won the most Gold medals, with the teams form the U.K. coming in second and the USA third.

Most successful athletes include swimmer Matthew Codrey of Australia, who won 5 Gold and three Silver medals, and the South African amputee swimmer Natalie du Toit and Canadian wheelchair raser Chantal Petitclerc who won five Gold medals each.

Vom 6. bis 17. September 2008 fanden in Beijing die Paralympischen Spiele statt. Sportler mit Behinderungen aus der ganzen Welt nahmen am größten Sportereignis nach den Olympischen Spielen in der chinesischen Hauptstadt teil.

Wettkämpfe fanden in verschieden Sportarten statt, u.a. im Sitzvolleyball, Schwimmen, Fechten, Rollstuhlbasketball, Rollstuhltennis und auf dem Gebiet der Leichtathletik.

Wie bereits bei den Olympischen Spielen, gewann China die meisten Goldmedaillen, diesmal gefolgt von Großbritannien und den USA.

Erfolgreichste Sportler waren der australische Schwimmer Matthew Cowdrey mit 5 Gold- und drei Silbermedaillen, Rollstuhlathletin Chantal Petitclerc aus Canada mit 5 x Gold und die südafrikanische Schwimmerin Natalie du Toit mit ebenfalls 5 Goldmedaillen.
