For eleven days, hundreds of amputee athletes, wheelchair athletes and athletes with other disabilities from around the world came to London to take part in the 2012 Paralympic Summer Games.

The Paralympics are the second biggest sports event after the Olympic Games. Athletes compete in various sports, including swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair fencing and athletics.

During the last Paralympic Games in 2008, China won the most Gold medals, with the teams form the U.K. coming in second and the USA third.

Most successful athletes during the last Paralympics include swimmer Matthew Codrey of Australia, who won 5 Gold and three Silver medals, and the South African amputee swimmer Natalie du Toit and Canadian wheelchair raser Chantal Petitclerc who won five Gold medals each.

Sportlerinnen und Sportler mit Behinderung aus der ganzen Welt sind nach London gekommen, um an den 2012 Paralympic Games teilzunehmen.

Wettkämpfe fanden in verschieden Sportarten statt, u.a. im Sitzvolleyball, Schwimmen, Fechten, Rollstuhlbasketball, Rollstuhltennis und auf dem Gebiet der Leichtathletik.

Während der Paralympischen Spiele 2008 in Beijing gewann China die meisten Goldmedaillen, gefolgt von Großbritannien und den USA.

Erfolgreichste Sportler der letzten Paralympics waren der australische Schwimmer Matthew Cowdrey mit 5 Gold- und drei Silbermedaillen, Rollstuhlathletin Chantal Petitclerc aus Canada mit 5 x Gold und die südafrikanische Schwimmerin Natalie du Toit mit ebenfalls 5 Goldmedaillen.
