For eleven days, hundreds of amputee athletes, wheelchair athletes and athletes with other disabilities from around the world came to London to take part in the 2012 Paralympic Summer Games.

The Paralympics are the second biggest sports event after the Olympic Games. Athletes compete in various sports, including swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair fencing and athletics.

Once again, China won the most Gold medals with the teams from the Russian Federation coming in second and the United Kingdom third.

The most memorable performances during the 2012 Paralympic Games came from athletes like amputee swimmer Jessica Long, who won eight medals in the pool, including five golds, two silvers and one bronze, the British amputee athlete Jonnie Peacock (age 19), whom it took - encouraged by a chanting audience - only 10.90 seconds to win the 100m T44 in a new Paralympic record time, Brazil’s top amputee swimmer Daniel Dias, who won 6 Gold medals and definitely former Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi, who won two golds and a silver in road cycling.

Sportlerinnen und Sportler mit Behinderung aus der ganzen Welt waren Ende August, Anfang September in London, um an den 2012 Paralympic Games teilzunehmen.

Wettkämpfe fanden in verschieden Sportarten statt, u.a. im Sitzvolleyball, Schwimmen, Fechten, Rollstuhlbasketball, Rollstuhltennis und auf dem Gebiet der Leichtathletik.

Erneut gewannen die Sportlerinnen und Sportler mit Behinderung aus der Volksrepublik China die meisten Goldmedaillen, gefolgt von den Teams aus Russland und Großbritannien.

Die beeindruckendsten Leistungen während der Paralympischen Sommerspiele in London kamen wohl von der Schwimmerin Jessica Long, die 8 Medaillen gewann, davon fünf Gold, zwei Silber und eine Bronze, dem britischen Leichtathleten Jonnie Peacock, der - angefeuert von den Zuschauern im Stadion - die 100 Meter in der Startklasse T44 in neuer Paralympischer Rekord-Zeit von 10.90 lief, dem Brasilianischen Top-Schwimmer Daniel Dias, der insgesamt 6 Goldmedaillen gewann und natürlich auch dem ehemaligen Formel 1 Fahrer Alex Zanardi, der 2 Gold- und eine Silbermedaille im Handbike-Rennen gewann.
