From September 7 to 17, 2008, hundreds of amputee athletes, wheelchair athletes and athletes with other disabilities from around the world were in Beijing for the 2008 Paralympic Games.
The Paralympics are the second biggest sports event after the Olympic Games. Athletes compete in various sports, including swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair fencing and athletics.
China won the most Gold medals, with the teams form the U.K. coming in second and the USA third.
Most successful athletes include swimmer Matthew Codrey of Australia, who won 5 Gold and three Silver medals, and the South African amputee swimmer Natalie du Toit and Canadian wheelchair raser Chantal Petitclerc who won five Gold medals each.
